Thursday, December 10, 2015 – CFBLA's Holiday Party was held at the offices of Holland & Knight LLP.  We arranged an evening of delicious food created by Chef Raul.  Chef Raul shared his culinary skills at New York City’s Tavern on the Green and Waldorf Astoria before coming to Florida.  We enjoyed delicious food, libations (including a specialty drink) and great desserts!!    Click HERE for a copy of the invitation.  

 

Thursday, November 19, 2015 – CFBLA's Monthly Luncheon

Our November luncheon included a panel discussion on lien stripping and the recent Caulkett decision from the U.S. Supreme Court.  Our panel addressed:

·         Start from the beginning: pre-McNeal and lien stripping

·         McNeal and its predecessor and progeny – where did it take lien stripping and how?

·         The Caulkett appeals and the decision – an analysis of the Court’s opinion

·         Where do we go from here?

·         How is Caulkett affecting existing appeals/lien strip motions?

·         Will we see new arguments attacking Dewsnup?

The panel was comprised of Alexis Leventhal, Jonathan Sykes and Cynthia Lewis, and Robert Branson. Alexis Leventhal is a Law Clerk to the Hon. Arthur B. Briskman and she is also an Adjunct Professor at Florida A&M University College of Law. Jonathan Sykes is an associate with Burr & Forman. He serves in the firm’s Ceditors’ Rights & Bankruptcy and Financial Services Litigation practice groups. Robert Branson is the owner of BransonLaw with over 25 years of experience.

June 18, 2015 CFBLA Luncheon - Time Barred Mortgages in Bankruptcy, presented by Joseph Towne

Mr. Joseph Towne presented "Time Barred Mortgages in Bankruptcy."  Mr. Towne addressed issues regarding the Statutes of Limitations for Mortgages in a Bankruptcy; Choice of Law for Mortgages in Bankruptcy; Nature of a Mortgage; Monetary and Non-Monetary Covenants; and Tolling, Suspending, Pre-empting the Statute of Limitations.  Mr. Towne specializes in representing investors on the secondary mortgage market and all areas of creditor litigation including bankruptcy, lender violations, and general civil litigation.
